Our Django Reinhardt appetite has been whetted by sweltering jazz band Gaucho — its regular Wednesday gigs at Amnesia overflow with inebriated young pleasure-seekers. Gaucho, like its brethren the George Cole Quintet and the Fishtank Ensemble, is heavily influenced by the deathless charm of Parisian Gypsy music of the 1920s and '30s, the champion of which was Reinhardt. The young Manouche was a guitar prodigy when a fire nearly killed him and took the use of two of his precious, precious fingers. After inventing a new way to play all the insane chords and pickings of "le jazz hot," he continued on as before, causing audiences everywhere and ever since to spasm with love for his romantic yet upbeat style. Tonight, the Quintet and the Ensemble celebrate his 100th birthday with original songs, Reinhardt classics, lightning-quick improvisation, musical saw-playing, and other sweet shenanigans.
