Practitioners of comedy routinely remind us that our own families are growhouses for laughs — in fact, this may qualify as a universal truth. Solo performer D’Lo grew up queer in a Hindu Tamil Sri Lankan family in Southern California. His mom (and surely others) had some thoughts on D’Lo’s being transgendered, and it would appear they were a little unenlightened and a lot funny. In his solo show, Ramble-Ations, D’Lo oscillates among a varied cast of characters, all contributing to his thoughts on the vibrant contradictions, realities, and occasional disharmony of straddling disparate cultures. Knitting together dissimilar elements is at the core of American experience, and D’Lo contends that embracing the discrepancies may be a superior option to ignoring the differences and calling it bliss. We really feel that.
