When word got out last year that Sleep/Om bassist Al Cisneros and doom torchbearer Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, etc.) had teamed with Neurosis mainstay Scott Kelly and Melvins drummer Dale Crover in a new band called Shrinebuilder, no one questioned the outfit's skull-crushing potential. The quartet's self-titled Neurot Recordings debut offers up bludgeoning in spades for underground metal fans, but balances the nod-inducing riff mayhem with hypnotic waves of guitar drone and surprising moments of majestic, meditative beauty. Recorded in a mere three days (and literally hours after all four members first played in the same room), the stunning album speaks to a special chemistry light years beyond most tossed-off supergroup collaborations.
