List: The S.F. subway to nowhere

The federal government has asked San Francisco to justify the planned creation of a $1.6 billion central subway line.  How will the subway help San Francisco?

• It will be the only promise Willie Brown ever kept

• It will represent our ultimate triumph over hills

• It will finally connect a part of the city where no one ever goes with a part that people don't visit often

• Even bigger Muni deficits mean more opportunities to raise awareness of Muni's budget nightmare

• Chinatown will finally have the same shitty transit options the rest of us endure

• Primo chance to name a subway line after Ronald Reagan

• It means jobs for construction workers who would otherwise be unemployed or doing something useful with their time

• It will prove once and for all that there really can be too much public transit

• A whole new excuse for being late to work

• In these trying and demoralizing times, it provides San Franciscans with much-needed hope to know that our leaders can still unify around a boondoggle

Gavin Newsom will ride it once
