Prolific author and certifiable woman Ariel Gore brings her new tome, Bluebird: Women and the New Psychology of Happiness, to the Bay Area for a reading. If you’ve been keeping up with psychology, or at least dipping into TED.com, you know that researchers have been turning from a “You’re f’ed up and broken!” model of analysis to a study of happiness and how we experience it. Like so much research, sadly, studies so far have lacked viable resources for modern, feminist women. Gore loathed the vacuum, and did her own research, resulting in Bluebird, an account of her quest for something better. She cofounded Hip Mama magazine in 1993 — it was the first publication for single, feminist, city-dwelling mothers. She continues to help intelligent women relate to motherhood and other endeavors without feeling they’ve surrendered their independence and self-definition.
