Conspiracy of Beards is a group of some 30 men who gather on small stages to sing a cappella versions of Leonard Cohen songs. That's their entire repertoire — tunes crafted by the revered Canadian songwriter. The result is haunting, as these classic numbers are musically arranged to more closely resemble hymns. The local choir, which performed its first show in 2003, comprises 10 tenors, more than 14 baritones, and 10 basses. These are men between the ages of 20 and 70 who work day jobs as carpenters, bike mechanics, attorneys, and visual artists. Together they harmonize on moody classics "Suzanne," "Chelsea Hotel No. 2," "Bird on a Wire," and "Everybody Knows," along with more obscure tracks. If anyone knows the depth of Cohen's songbook, it's these scruffy gents.
