Adam Green has come a long way since sharing the Moldy Peaches with Kimya Dawson. Or has he? The droll New York City lifer established himself early on by writing songs as easygoing as they could be grotesque, and six solo albums have only confirmed that particular skill set. His latest, Minor Love, is a collection of what feel like after-hours bedtime stories. The drum-machine fable “Castles And Tassels” revisits the Moldy Peaches’ singsong lilt, “Buddy Bradley” was inspired by a cult comic-book character, “Give Them A Token” flops along to chintzy organ, and the Lou Reed-ish single “What Makes Him Act So Bad” is punctuated by gargling guitar. No song on the album exceeds three minutes, and each features minimal instrumentation played by Green and such occasional guests as Little Joy’s Rodrigo Amarante. Though he’s dropped the glaring drug references this time, Green still sings of “flatulent assholes” and makes other dirty turns of phrase somehow sound cool. Touring behind Minor Love, he’s doing an all-ages show Tuesday followed by a 21-plus Wednesday. But expect some bawdiness from both.
