Flying Lotus

From the nexus of Los Angeles' simmering experimental hip-hop scene soars Flying Lotus, who shaves sheets of static over neck-snapping beats. Lotus plugs and plays as gleefully as any of his Warp Records labelmates, and his upcoming "space opera," Cosmogramma, is sure to leave you with a twisted ankle and a worn-out pair of waffle stompers. Lotus has been amassing a network of like-minded producers, and will be joined at the Mezzanine by Scottish dub-stepper Kode9.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
