New kids on the block have taken my place/Walking on my grave," Fred Cole screeched in his last band with his wife, Toody, the mildly legendary garage-rockers Dead Moon. He has a right to those lyrics — he turns 62 in August. In the Portland, Ore., native's newest incarnation, the slower, chuggier Pierced Arrows, he remains wary ("They're coming after you!" he screams like Axl Rose in "Paranoia"), but still rages with riffs ("Black Rainbow" crunches like the Sabbath/Dio portmanteau of the title suggests). The Coles' hyperprolific psych/grunge sound remains kaleidoscopic as the Nuggets box set. You can hear why Eddie Vedder hand-wrote a recommendation letter for them to the public.
