Kids say the darnedest things, like “*&^%#$!” or “I’m sorry, I won’t feel bad ever again.” At WritersCorps, the idea is that encouraging creativity can help students feel better, not become violent, and not start on the drugs and/or booze thing. “Claim the Block” is a WritersCorps event series showing off the proof: Kids read their work in impressive museum settings. Students have already read at the Museum of the African Diaspora and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, and tonight’s event features writers Aracely Gonzalez and Rick D’Elia shepherding students from International Studies Academy and Aptos Middle School. Imagine the difference between a hard-luck kid’s everyday experience (underfunded public school, bizarre public transportation, etc.) and standing on an elegant stage with an audience hanging on your every word. The writer-teachers have focused on the museums’ collections, the world of adolescence, and as the name suggests, the way kids sees themselves in their communities.
