No one does collage like Raymond Saunders. The classic example of a politically motivated abstract painter, Saunders ought not be confined to a term like "collage," having done famous, magnificent work in other areas, including the difficult-to-master medium of "opinionated pamphlet." (Black Is a Color.) But at "Beauty As Media," his canvas' attractively angular lines indicate, yet again, a man with a singular genius for pasting little torn bits of paper into his compositions, giving them verve, a smirk, and friendly tension. Smeared brushstrokes, swaths of darkness, and stark white emptiness usually stand behind in Saunders' work; the textures and shiny scraps up front copy a butterfly's trip, wheeling, bouncing, zooming.
