Are you tired? Anxiety-ridden? Do you have headaches? A depressed mood? Do you experience all these things while in America? Congratulations; you might have Americanitis. We certainly do. A common ailment in the late 19th century, when they knew shit about psychopathological conditions, Americanitis afflicted scores of bored, stressed-out white people with good paychecks. Today, it cares nothing for paychecks. Artist Alison Pebworth can help. In addition to making stellar art with an air of the old-time traveling roadshow, she’s been crisscrossing the city, getting info on modern-day Americanitis, for the past six weeks. With the help of volunteers and her crack team of pseudomedical disease-'n’-liquor wranglers — collaborator Jerome Waag, “beekeeper and meadmaker” Bryon Waibel, and home distiller Adam Wolf — Pebworth has brewed up a magical cure-all. Down some at the potion social “Good for What Ails You: The Americanitis Elixir” — who knows, you might want to start jogging or go to the Metreon.
