The Other White Milk

We’re readily amenable to the notion that goats' milk is healthier than cows' milk. Cows are okay, but goats are adorable. The “Goat Girls” even call it a superfood. We’ll rally around that, too, along with anything else that comes from people who name themselves after goats. At the Goat Festival, the Goat Girls are one of the star attractions. They consist of three women from local goat farms who founded www.supergoat.org, a Web site dedicated to promoting goats' milk — we’re surprised to learn that goats' milk is nearly identical to mother’s milk, but we’re fully behind it. One of the girls, Laura Howard, is from Laloo's Goat Milk Ice Cream in Petaluma — that’s right, goats' milk ice cream. Other attractions at the fest include cooking demos by Goat Cheese author Maggie Foard and chef Mark Dommen of One Market Restaurant, a talk by Rainbow Grocery cheesemonger Gordon Edgar, and milk and cheese tastings. Best part: Goat Girl Jennifer Bice is bringing, direct from her Redwood Hill Farm and Creamery workplace, “adorable baby goats” (that’s a quote, but are there any other kinds?) for everybody to fall over themselves trying to charm.
