At Bay Area Dance Week, there are so many events, classes, and performances, with so many local troupes, that it took us more than three minutes to scroll down the events page — this speaks to the massive footprint of BADW and to its Web design, equally. Opening weekend offers something for the widest possible audience, because it’s free, on fire, and shocking: the Temple of Poi 2010 Fire Dancing Expo. Imagine every fire dancer you’ve ever seen in a parking lot, quadruple the talent, take away the dust, tone down the hallucinogens, and plop everyone in the stented heart of the city’s high-end consumer district with a barrel of lighter fluid. This week’s Union Square tourists came on the right weekend, absolutely. The Expo features Temple of Poi talent as well as renowned practitioners from around the world, including MCP from Scotland and Flames of the Phoenix from Australia.
