El Presidente

During the last American presidential election, a group called Amigos de Obama encouraged Latinos to vote — shaking the sleeping giant's shoulder, so to speak. One of the group's projects was musical, resulting in several new Obama-themed songs. One, "Viva Obama," was recorded in both mariachi and norteño styles. It mentions a health care plan. But it's "Obama Reggaetón" that really has legs, with its deep beat and one of the best rhymes of that wordplay-heavy election: "¿Cómo se dice? ¿Cómo se llama? Obama! Obama!" Local band La Colectiva heads up a Cinco de Mayo Cumbia Party tonight; "Obama Reggaetón" has pride of place on its MySpace page. La Colectiva, with its combinations of Afro-Peruvian, son jarocho, and other Latin American musical traditions, has been known to cause chair-dancing in cubicle-land, so just imagine how fun the live show is.
