It Takes Blood and Guts

For those who like their comedy black, their theater aisles running with blood, and their cinema cultish, Joshua Grannell’s new movie fits the bill nicely. Grannell is, of course, also known as Peaches Christ, the scream/drag queen hostess of late-night movie screening series Midnight Mass, where films like Showgirls, Coffy, and Xanadu have received over-the-top, theatrical preshow treatments. He spent the better part of 2009 filming his bloody debut, All About Evil, entirely locally, and now the cat is let out of the bag as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival. The story features a mousy librarian who inherits her father’s floundering old movie house — the Victoria Theatre — and turns to serial killing to save the family business, producing a series of horrific short films. A small army of gore enthusiasts launches her to local celebrity, unaware that the murders taking place in the films are real. The event is a one-night only world premiere, and some of the stars — Natasha Lyonne (American Pie, But I’m a Cheerleader), Mink Stole (one of John Waters’ Dreamlanders), Cassandra Peterson (better known as Elvira), and Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) — appear in the wild pre-show Ms. Christ has planned for the big event.
