From the title to the music itself, Broken Social Scene's new Forgiveness Rock Record plays like an apology for the unevenness of the group's self-titled third album. Recorded with Tortoise's John McEntire, Forgiveness reconnects the many-limbed band with its ambitious yet focused beginnings. There are strings and horns, the usual pileup of voices and songwriters, and even guests. Pavement's Spiral Stairs and the Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop show up, while "Sentimental X's" includes three of the singers Broken Social Scene helped launch: Feist, Metric's Emily Haines, and Stars' Amy Millan. Definitely a comeback, it's also a great whoop of creative triumph.
