New York contemporary-dance maven Kate Weare has choreographed to Gillian Welch before. Bits of “I’ll Fly Away” found their way into Weare’s Bridge of Sighs — Welch’s music is an unusual choice for any dancer, really. But the collusion prefigured tonight’s show, the Crooked Jades and the Kate Weare Dance Company. Weare’s new piece, Gone Before and Rattling, is still forming out of an earlier week-long collaboration with the San Francisco band, and won’t premiere officially until later, in N.Y.C., but we’re getting a taste tonight. The Crooked Jades are less of a weird choice for staged professional work than Welch, but the kind of dancing that usually goes with their music is more Appalachian clogging than fluid New York contemporary. As a group known for the stretched-out, spooky side of old-timey music, the Jades use vintage instrumentation and a deep reverence for the intensely beautiful moans of the past to get their sound. Tonight, the musicians and the dancers make something new out of something old.
