Pretty Things

In most of San Francisco, professionally landscaped back yards are a rare treasure. But in the Forest Hill area, they’re lined up like necklaces in a jeweler’s case, which is pretty much what Forest Hill resembles. Today you get to turn the key and handle them at the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society’s Urban Gardens for Families, touring work done by Janet Moyer Landscaping, which has designed more than 400 local gardens in the past 20 years. The company does not, however, value prettiness at the expense of practicality: sustainability is Moyer’s buzzword. The gardens on the tour are meant to be living areas, extensions of the home, with pathways, veggie gardens, play areas, and habitats for local fauna. They’re also objets d'art in their own right, not to mention objects of envy, jealousy, and, if you just keep your head on straight, beauty.
