They Said What?

A book of interviews with comedians followed by their portraits sounds slightly ominous, like something you’d find anchoring a liquidating B. Dalton. Satiristas!: Comedians, Contrarians, Raconteurs & Vulgarians is not that. First, that title: hell of a thing. Second, it was created by the guy who directed The Aristocrats!, comedian Paul Provenza, whose contact list has so many headliners it comes with a two-drink minimum. Provenza knows outlaw-ish comedians, the right outlaw-ish comedians, and he knows how to get them to do things for him, like sit for interviews and have their picture taken by comedy portrait photographer Dan Dion. (Dion is known as “comedy's Richard Avedon,” because that’s a pretty funny thing to say. Also, he’s a fine photographer.) Provenza gets many people worth listening to, like … well, we don’t want to give anyone special treatment, except for Paul Mooney.
