Since debuting a decade ago under the name Manitoba (changed to Caribou in 2004 for legal reasons), Dan Snaith has applied a drummer's ear and mathematician's air to freakbeat fills and psych-pop trills. Early on, he threaded an undercurrent of Krautrock's percussive insistence through his work; on 2007's Andorra, he even appropriated paced, synthetic percolation, long familiar to fans of balmy trance build-ups. Still, no one expected the complete retuning of rhythmic formulas displayed on his recent full-length, Swim, which he has declared to be his aqueous take on dance music. Snaith brings textures of melancholic disco, bleary minimal house, and palpitating tech-funk to the disc. The result is Arthur Russell and Hot Chip tenderness against acid house–laced sequencing.
