Roky Erickson, singer for the 1960s Texas psychedelic legends the 13th Floor Elevators, was gravely beset by drug problems and mental illness for many years. He has emerged from his dark places, resuming his career with varying levels of success. Along the way, REM, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Butthole Surfers acknowledged his influence. In 2001, thanks to his brother and some trustworthy lawyers, Erickson's physical, mental, and financial profile began to seriously improve. Last month, he released an album recorded with Okkervil River, True Love Cast Out All Evil. He sounds sharp and rejuvenated, channeling the past without wallowing in it.
