Drag racing is so-called because the high-speed competitors use a parachutelike apparatus to slow themselves down; it creates drag. The Great High-Heeled Drag Race is a play on words, but the racers here also need a little something extra to slow themselves down. Having gathered their pledges (the race benefits the Keep the Steps in the Castro campaign to keep the 27-year-old Castro Country Club recovery center from losing its pretty house), the runners must attempt to complete 500 steps while wearing elevated shoes. The possibilities are oh, so many: High-heeled sneakers come immediately to mind, as do chunky 1990s-style thick-heeled boots. But respect is due the “lady” who “runs” in stilettos, n’est-ce pas? Ditto she who chooses delicate materials or impractical ankle treatments. No heel-height requirement seems forthcoming from the organizers, and this may incite a height war, or it may mean nothing. Faced with the decision, we’d be tempted by character shoes, the famous strapped slipper of Broadway hoofers, which are made for hard use, for sweat and pounding. But we’re total pansies, and these athletes are … doing it for a good cause.
