"In the world I see, you're stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway." At painter Alex Lukas' exhibit "These Are the Days of Miracle and Wonder," the work itself seems to be a fan of Tyler Durden, the twisted mirror image of a protagonist in Fight Club, author of the above manifesto. Lukas shows a series of kinda mindblowing watercolors – the brute skill here is off the charts – of two things: postapocalyptic public transportation and/or sweet '70s rape vans, and half-underwater skyscrapers. The large vehicles generally lie on their sides, staring blank-eyed past overgrown edge-of-suburbia landscapes. The flooded downtown scenarios recall the weather-porn disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow's waves crashing around the Statue of Liberty, but in the world Lukas sees, graceful algae grows around the edges of steel and glass towers entirely untouched by the clear, peaceful water five hundred feet deep around them.
