Unweathered Embers takes place in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, a 1895 Romanesque Revival building designed by architect Henry Geilfuss. The red-brick masterpiece structure has two towers, pointed arches, pier buttresses, a rose window, and a large, fine organ. Why are we telling you so much about it? Because for Unweathered Embers, part of the ambitiously Soundwave Festival ((4)) Green Sound, you should consider St. Mark’s not only part of the band, but its throat. The night features 16 Bay Area vocalists alongside Oakland group Myrmyr performing "haunting Baltic folk–inspired chamber sounds," which rely on the sacred space. With bells, percussion, and other instruments chosen for their long reverberations, the players and the singers are grouped around the church, sometimes concealed, and the audience is encouraged to drift through all the beauty. Later performances in theseries include soundscapes set into a garden (June 13), audio "florets" hung from trees (June 17), pedal-powered music at a street festival (June 20), and more.
