Girls Gone Dialed

The three women of surfy-psychedelic garage band Grass Widow — bassist Hannah Lew, guitar player Raven Mahon, and drummer Lillian Maring — say they don't listen to much modern music. They like the Kinks. But to us, Grass Widow's reverb-heavy, 1960s-weirdo vocals have common ground with their excellent local sistren in the Sandwitches. Both bands have been ruling the festival scene this summer and last, with insolent, indolent girl-pop that sounds like the Shangri-Las took peyote. Grass Widow's three-way harmonies and brash breakdowns on two eponymous recordings, an EP on Captured Tracks and an LP on Make a Mess, have netted them tons of fans. These kids make us superproud of San Francisco, and they're just out of the studio for a third record.
