The three women of surfy-psychedelic garage band Grass Widow bassist Hannah Lew, guitar player Raven Mahon, and drummer Lillian Maring say they don't listen to much modern music. They like the Kinks. But to us, Grass Widow's reverb-heavy, 1960s-weirdo vocals have common ground with their excellent local sistren in the Sandwitches. Both bands have been ruling the festival scene this summer and last, with insolent, indolent girl-pop that sounds like the Shangri-Las took peyote. Grass Widow's three-way harmonies and brash breakdowns on two eponymous recordings, an EP on Captured Tracks and an LP on Make a Mess, have netted them tons of fans. These kids make us superproud of San Francisco, and they're just out of the studio for a third record.
