For better or worse, a lot of young women who were born out of the seeds of the sexual revolution began to view the word feminist as shorthand for humorless, uptight, and unhappy. Instead, these intrinsically powerful, socially subversive, and unapologetically sexy gals bandied about the word whore. This was not a backslide, according to Ginger Murray, editor of Whore!, a new genre-busting womens magazine. As playful phrases like shoe whore have wedged their way into workaday vernacular, emphasis has shifted to the proto-Germanic root khoraz or khoron, meaning one who desires. Its been a long time coming. In 1872, suffragette Tennessee Claflin said, We tried to make rake as disgraceful as whore. We cannot do it. And now we are determined to take the disgrace out of whore. That quote is emblazoned across Whore! Magazines website, but it is Claflins sister, Victoria Claflin Woodhull, an extremely unorthodox feminist who ran for U.S. president in 1872, who is honored with the first feature in the maiden issue of the magazine dedicated to all that is fast, feminist, and feminine. Beyond these lessons in linguistics and history, Whore! offers insight on car repair, make-up, vibrators, gay porn, blood play, and high-end lowbrow fashion. Tonights Whore! Magazine launch party features Cameron McHenry, Dusty Horn, Le Cancan Bijou, Gabrielle Ekedal and Angus Martin, and many more.
