Charles Quinton Murphy (better known as Charlie Murphy) is the older brother of Eddie Murphy. But unlike his sibling, whose stratospheric rise to megacelebrity began as a teenager on Saturday Night Live, he didn’t really come into his own true fame until he reached his 40s. It was then he moved up from bit parts in cult hood flicks like CB4 and The Players Club to co-starring on Chappelle’s Show, where he held court with “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories,” including memorable encounters with Prince and Rick James. Murphy’s comedic resemblance to his brother begins with the same wide smile and ends with a similarly infectious laugh — but he’s much more aggressive, much more in touch with the middle class, and possessed of a brand of razor-sharp wit Eddie has never employed. He has made a few local appearances to perform standup, and even references the city in one of his routines. “There’s a tough part of San Francisco, man,” he says in his Comedy Central special, I Will Not Apologize. “They call it the Tenderloin. I’m not making this up!”
