Club preview: James Holden

Wednesday, Jun 30 2010

Somewhere within the echoing pings of Pink Floyd and the insistent percussive rounds of Cluster sits inspiration for the U.K.'s James Holden. Holden, however, is not a member of a space-rock collaboration or a Krautrock collective. He's a progressive DJ and producer and the head of the label Border Community who made his name in trance before transitioning in the mid-2000s into truly hypnotic tone manipulation. Where Holden excels is in building momentum through overlays of ambience filtered from his more psychedelic affectations. This is evidenced on his recent volume of the venerable DJ Kicks series, which is saturated with bleary, tribal, cosmic eddies.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
