Maybe it's the huge (and hugely popular) riffs of the Hold Steady, or a collective need for something musical that isn't made of ones and zeros. But whatever the cause, musty classic-rock sounds are on the rise again. Among the better proponents of '60s-sounding rock are San Diego's the Donkeys, who wowed a Hold Steady–loving crowd at the Fillmore in May. Sounding sufficiently vintage to have one of their songs play a mysterious acid-era artifact on the TV series Lost, the music of the Donkeys recalls all the usual suspects: the Band, Dylan, the Stones, and the Beatles. Thankfully, underdone arrangements and a fun, folky side keep the Donkeys from sounding as bland and predictable as most retro-throwback outfits do.
