Those Who DO Know History

Kate Davis and David Heilbroner's documentary Stonewall Uprising is mandatory. Young gays, if you do not see this film, you're both shooting yourself in the foot and denying yourself a great pleasure. Since that isn't what you're about, we feel sure you have SE on your summer viewing list already. But in case you don't, and in case you take the admittedly boring mainstream Pride festivities for granted, please. It's about inspiring archival footage of cops busting queer heads and authority figures saying things like "If we catch you with a homosexual, the rest of your life will be a living hell. And you will be caught. Don't think you won't be caught." Do we even need to make the point that all this took place not so long ago? The talking heads here include one of the cops who raided the bar (Drag mother, what do they mean, "raid?") as well as former New York City mayor Ed Koch.
