If Joanna Newsom had emerged in the 1970s, she'd likely have been on the Virgin or Harvest labels with simpatico songster-mavericks Kevin Coyne, Kevin Ayers, and Roy Harper. In 2002, Newsom — after years studying composition and the harp in its Celtic, African, and South American manifestations — opened shows for contemporary mavericks Will Oldham and Devendra Banhart. Joining the Drag City label, she got luminaries Van Dyke Parks and Jim O'Rourke help bring to fruition her vision of Anglo-American folk — one that's both starkly traditional and ambitiously progressive. Newsom's latest album, Have One on Me, shows that her aspirations know few bounds — it's three discs of her kaleidoscopic talents. How she'll manage to perform it live ought to be interesting.
