In terms of self-aggrandizing firebrand fiction, Neal Pollack was the guy before everybody knew there was a guy. Then he became a dad and wrote a book about parenting. We read a few pages. It was a book about parenting. Then he wrote about yoga. Fuck yoga! Neal Pollack writes books about himself called The Neal Pollack Anthology of American Literature, not books about yoga called Old Like Me? (Actually, Stretch: The Unlikely Making of a Yoga Dude.) We haven't read a few pages, not yet, because we don't have the book, and because yoga? Fuck yoga! Tonight he appears with Chronicle columnist Mark Morford, a different sort of firebrand who still has a country's worth of enemies to skewer, who for the past 10 years has been teaching — what's this? — yoga. Vinyasa. What? Apparently we're to understand that, between belching fire at his computer screen and poking through his e-mail with tongs, Morford has been leading practitioners in the soft art of slow stretching. Allow us to crush the thoroughly useless glasses we look at the world through. Pollack and Morford, writing, practicing, and otherwise instructing others in — yoga. You might think yoga is going through a new phase. Maybe it is about to. Morford also wrote a book, not about yoga, called The Daring Spectacle: Adventures in Deviant Journalism. Tonight, these larger-than-life figures talk about themselves and remind us that it is okay, every once in a while, to relax, and even, perhaps more than every once in a while, to lay down on a mat, visualize the universe, and try not to fart.
