Kathryn Spence presents new animals. They're made from old stuff -- "pants" is one of her favorite materials. She likes "string" and "sweaters," too. But her work has a very un-stuffed-animal-like ferocity, and the animals appear to be simultaneously relaxed and ready to rip a mouse in half -- just the way they are in their regular life outside the gallery walls. Muscles seem to tense under tufts of shredded "pants" or yarn or crumpled paper or wire, and eyes seem to have already assessed whether you are a threat. Spence is a careful and adoring but above all respectful observer of a completely overused subject, making it all the more shocking to find it new and fresh and looking angry, like it wishes you would leave its habitat alone.
