Cheeky

An exhibit with a name like “Ass to Ass” suggests something a lot more salacious than what’s offered up here, but the attention-grabbing title makes a certain kind of sense. Even though the work of local photographers Jesse Pollock and Ruth Swanson suffers from a lack of actual asses, the duo’s respective styles are just as unlike one another as they are complementary, making the show’s title cheekily appropriate. “Ass to Ass” gains much of its impact from the visible oppositions between their work. Pollock is concerned with visually compelling moments of quietude, while Swanson captures the elusive instances of calm that emerge from movement or transition. Pollock’s work is fascinatingly inscrutable, focusing on subjects like animals or costumed women that appear to defy simple explanation, while Swanson’s photos are intimately personal, simple and candid shots of moments from her life. It’s these very oppositions that draw attention to the similarities: Both photographers are skilled at capturing meditative moments in unexpected settings.
