Quel Brute!

How would you like a brand-new Al Pacino? The old one is broken. France's Vincent Cassell is France's Al Pacino (although he has more range) and he could be yours, too. Mesrine: Killer Instinct is a grand-scale gangster film that presses some of the same buttons Pacino's early work did: Man against society, style and freedom against morality, cop-killing as birthright, that sort of thing, which Cassell mined to get the Best Actor César. Jean-François Richet got the Best Director as well, and the second film in the two-part series, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 is scheduled for next week here in the States.
