Hugh Beresford Hammond — Beres Hammond to his fans — is Jamaica's gentleman crooner, a nattily dressed dude who still makes female audiences swoon. He has enjoyed decades of reggae chart success via his emotionally charged songs and raspy, Otis Redding–inspired vocals. Known for his lovers'-rock ballads, a reggae equivalent to soul slow-jams, Hammond broke through in the late '70s as singer for funk-fueled band Zap Pow, whose "Last War" was sampled on Bahamian MC Collie Buddz' 2007 urban crossover hit, "Come Around." Since going solo in 1979, Hammond has recorded two dozen albums and created the Harmony House studio and label. He shines even brighter onstage, decked out in linen shirts and Kangol cap while belting out numbers like "Full Attention," "Putting Up Resistance," and "What One Dance Can Do."
