After almost two decades of sculpting intensely oblique metal-noise, it feels as if Boris pointedly strives for the difficult and unpredictable. The Japanese three-piece's track on "Chapter Ahead Being Fake," a July split single with Torche, expertly demonstrates this trait. The 12-minute-long "Luna" embarks with a wave of languid instrumentation — contemplative, small, and practically forgettable. Then, near 1:30, a loud jolt of distortion crashes in, shocking the senses like a screamer video found on the recesses of the Internet. Boris throws in many more thrilling mutations: a feedback-laced melody writhes, drums pound, guitarist Wata croons a delicate "Ooh-ooh" against a male counterpart's Japanese, and the composition majestically crests, flatlines, and revitalizes with an intimidating bang. By its end, "Luna" is drastically dissimilar to its original form — one satisfying sign of a band reveling in its own density.
