As the visual terrain continues to shift in the Mission District, one thing remains consistent: the neighborhood’s varied and vibrant residents relentlessly crank out innovative, often socially conscious art. In music and literature and film, there’s a passel of fine fiends pushing limits in the name of the greater cultural good. Among them is true local treasure and OG Mission girl Veronica Majano, whose filmmaking has paid homage to the lives and culture of Latinos throughout her oeuvre. Tonight’s world premiere of Why I Ride: Low and Slow is a collaboration between Majano and Conscious Youth Media Crew, a local nonprofit catering to inner-city youth looking to tell their stories and gain media skills. Focusing on lowrider culture, the film explores the way these exquisite cars have shaped the Mission experience: as spaces for socializing and flirtation, and as the objects of anticruising laws and police harassment. Why I Ride screens at “Mission Muralismo Film Series Part 2” with several other films based on life in the Mission, including two of Majano’s, the beautiful I Reminisce and Calle Chula. The film program is followed by a Q&A with the artists.
