Now a first cause for almost as many useless D.I.Y. imitators as Nirvana, Animal Collective is overrated yet impossible to dismiss. Every time the mania seems ready to die down, the band ensnares fans anew with a song like "Peacebone" or "Summertime Clothes." Same with Collective figurehead Panda Bear, aka Noah Lennox. His second album, Person Pitch, is a feel-good dub of Beach Boys harmony-murk enswirled with four-track tape breakdowns and superimposed reverb. It grows even on listeners who wish it wouldn't. His upcoming third album, Tomboy, is preceded by a seven-inch single pairing "Tomboy" and "Slow Motion," two of his dubbest, most echo-dripping songs yet. Vocals on both tunes drizzle into oblivion, and Lennox even shows off his guitar playing for more or less the first time. With a single this hypnotic, expect the rest of the album (masterwork?) to be the same. It doesn't look like we'll be dismissing this guy anytime soon.
