On its first album, Stereo Total reworked Salt-N-Pepa's perennial hit "Push It" by adding gloriously jittery drums, minimalist keyboard beeps, and heavily accented vocals. It's safe to say that the dreamy garage-pop cover of a hip-hop gem won over many now-eternal Stereo Total fans. French and German duo Françoise Cactus and Brezel Göring are the quintessential indie boy-girl act, having pumped out quirky French pop, lo-fi, and electro ditties since 1995. And we mean quirky: They claim their first recording together was a 10-minute recipe in which all ingredients had a sexual connotation. Their new album, Baby Ouh!, keeps up the weird fun with kitschy 8-bit videogame samples, kissy noises, laser pings, and chirping birds. All this, in typical Stereo Total fashion, is overlaid with call-and-response talk-singing — in three languages, no less.
