Elaine Buckholtz is the Bay Area's foremost large-scale light-installation artist; she has run coordinated film projections in every window of a seven-story building, for example. At “Left to Swoon,” she collaborates with Ana Teresa Fernandez, the Bay Area's foremost painter of scenes from her own performance art. Fernandez's current exhibit, “Ablution,” features her usual main character, a pretty and high-heeled yet relatable everywoman up against the elements and at odds with society, played by the artist herself. This time, she's covered in water. Many of the canvases have titles such as Aquarius (performance documentation at the Tijuana–San Diego border) because the unseen where of the image — its political reality — is often as important as the visible what. Also, the paintings are gorgeous: cinematic, photorealistic, and extraordinarily large. Buckholtz takes the water emphasis of the show and builds on it by lighting the paintings, filming them, turning them, and reflecting them — we love the possibilities of light plus water in the hands of these two masters.
