In Exit Through the Gift Shop, filmmaker Terry Guetta aimed to capture the secret world of “street art” – a form of graffiti using various media – that started appearing in the 1990s in cities across the globe. The Los Angeles-based Guetta got more than he could have hoped for, but critics have said he was duped and the resulting film is a hoax. No matter, others say. In fact they contend that the very question makes the film more fascinating and true to its subject. Guetta started off traveling with groups of street artists – who worked with stencils, sculpture, posters, stickers, and other media – in the U.S. and Europe. The project changed drastically, however, after he met the British artist who goes by the name Banksy. Banksy essentially commandeered the film, turning it into his own narrative. He remained off screen and distorted his voice to protect his anonymity. Promotional materials call it “the world’s first street art disaster movie.”
