Say what you will about Emeryville – that the city has sold its soul to the likes of Ikea, the Home Depot, and the developers that back them – but the town also values art. Weird metal sculptures line the parking lots of the big-box stores. The little man who inhabits the “walk/don’t walk” signs at crosswalks appears painted on public fixtures at numerous streetcorners, holding his disembodied head, juggling multiple heads, and so on. Emeryville has also long been home to numerous artists, and during October you’ll have a chance to see what they can do. Ninety-four artists who live or work in E’ville will show and sell their artwork at the Emeryville Art Exhibition. The juried exhibit contains painting, sculpture, photography, prints, textiles, ceramics, fashion, furniture, and glass. The event is put on by Emeryville Celebration of the Arts. The city, keeping with its policy of promoting public art, will select and purchase some of the work to display with its permanent collection at City Hall. This year’s event takes place in a donated commercial location near the freeway and existing shopping areas. The artists will be on hand for a reception Friday, Oct. 1, starting at 6 p.m., and the work will be on display through Oct. 24. See the event’s website for more about how to find it – and what you’ll find.
