Susan G. Komen is not the corporate sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. According to charitable sports fundraising naming conventions, she’s right where the sponsor usually goes, but no. Susan G. Komen is the name of a 36-year-old woman who got breast cancer in 1977 and didn’t survive. Back then, all cancer was shameful and “breast” was a sex or mom word only -- doctors didn’t even like to talk about it. On her deathbed, Komen was thinking of the future. Not hers, of course -- yours. She elicited a promise from her sister Nancy to do everything in her power to make sure breast cancer got the attention, funding, and respect it deserved. Thirty-plus years later, the Race for the Cure (a 5K run or 1-mile walk) that Nancy started has raised millions of dollars, been lauded by President Obama, and is largely responsible for widespread public awareness via pink ribbon.
