Yes, we know. It's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass weekend. That's great. In case you hate bluegrass or can't take the mellow, though, it's also AIDS Wolf weekend. You don't have to hate bluegrass, it's just that we can't imagine a big crossover crowd — but our hats are off to any Emmylou Harris fan who shows up for this one. Challenging, polyrhythmic, dissonant screeches propel AIDS Wolf's No Wave sound; we hear the outer edges of Jimi Hendrix in Alex Moskos' guitar, so there, there's a baby-boomer reference for ya. Yannick Desranleau's drumming and Chloe Lum's screams sound insane and possibly dangerous, which is great for those of us who like that, but in reality they're tightly structured in what the band calls “disjunctive compositional forms.” You won't see any “Hawaiian” shirt and mandal ensembles in the audience, we're guessing.
