People of Somewhere, We Send You the Rainbow of San Francisco

One hears and sees the extreme right wing. Its reasoning is familiar to most -- you could probably tell Terry Jones why he’s doing what he’s doing, even if you disagree. But the left, not so much. Radicals who think it’s gross to engineer camera-friendly theatrics simply aren’t heard or seen in quite the same way. This is a shame, especially for children and young teens who hear center and right rhetoric constantly but are hard put to find -- yes, dammit, even on the Internet -- intelligent responses that champion equality, love, diversity, and creativity. Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is that response and has been for years. At The End of San Francisco: A Preview Reading, this eloquent chronicler reads from his in-progress farewell to the city. So he’s leaving us, but we can’t be mad. Sycamore has done as much to make San Francisco what it is today as anyone, and we trust he’ll be the overeducated, complex, challenging, and perfectly articulated response to the Joneses of this world wherever he goes.
