Its no wonder the people behind a daylong tribute to bicycles in San Francisco would discourage participants from bringing beer. But the reason might surprise you: The organizers are supplying the cerveza. (Not to mention they dont want to turn into Bay to Breakers II and risk getting shut down because of a bunch of sloppy drunks.) They also encourage people who come to the Tour de Fat to be in costume, to trick out their rides, and to ride those rides rather than hauling them in by car or truck. (A note to those who cart around $3,000 road bikes on top of Lexus or Mercedes SUVs: Youre missing the point.) But they will make an exception for one person who wants to trade a gas-powered vehicle for a bicycle. That person will arrive in a polluting four-wheeler but leave on a new commuter bike. Sound gimmicky? Maybe. But the proceeds from the event all go toward bicycle and environmental causes. We find that pretty hard to argue with. Plus, there are fire-jumping bike acts, a parade (remember the costumes?), and live music. And did we mention beer?
