The U.K. has a proud history of mischievous producers who noodle with the conventions of electronic music. Misfits like Squarepusher bent drum 'n' bass into odd shapes, while Ninja Tune's Coldcut and Funki Porcini litter their output with weird tempos and irreverent samples. Now that the bass-heavy genre dubstep has received serious attention, it's only natural that somebody would want to tweak it. That's what former college roommates Dominic Maker and Kai Campos do as Mount Kimbie, a project that swaps dubstep's hard rhythms for found-sound samples, skeletal beats, indie-pop guitars, and vivid synths. The tracks on Kimbie's Hotflush Records debut, Crooks & Lovers, sound like a peyote-fueled fistfight among R&B singer Cassie, Hyperdub artist Burial, and indie darlings Grizzly Bear.
