The recent Hope Sandoval show renewed our desire to rehear the epic, off-kilter women's voices that emerged in the early 1990s. Sandoval was even better than we had hoped she didn't foreground her Mazzy Star hits, but she did put the entire audience into a swaying, lovestruck trance. The Cowboy Junkies released several classic albums at about that time, notably 1988's The Trinity Session, which is made of meditative country-roots music, shimmery microphones, and Margo Timmins' sexy-philosopher voice; she has no equal. Currently, the Junkies' original, never-changed lineup is focused on Renmin Park, a new album of poetic musings about China. May Sinead O'Connor visit us soon.
